You may have heard about acupuncture before, or have seen it being performed through various social media or entertainment venues. For anyone who may be entertaining the idea of trying holistic medicine, you may be wondering how shoving a bunch of thin, tiny needles into your skin could possibly make anyone feel even slightly improved. Wouldn’t that be painful?!
It may sound like the most unpleasant way to spend the afternoon initially; there is proof that this type of healing practice may be more beneficial than painful. Acupuncture has been practiced for well over 2,500 years, and with that kind of record that has many thinking there may be something to these needles after all. Devoted acupuncture practitioners swear that it is the miracle and secret to the quality of life, as it can help to treat anything from allergies and cramps, to depression and addiction.
Acupuncture targets certain areas of the skin. By inserting needles, these points can help treat a variety of conditions. Meant to help stimulate the nerve heavy spots of the skin, the needles begin to influence organs, tissues, glands and perform various functions of the body. As the needle (faintly) pierces the surface of the skin, the nerves send off a signal to the immune system for a response to promote circulation, pain sensory and begin wound healing process. Through the ancient Chinese philosophy, they believed that the body was filled with a flowing energy known as ‘qi’, pronounced ‘chee’. This life-giving invisible force would travel freely through the body when the individual’s mental and psychical states were balanced, while if this qi is blocked it results in the body’s illness.
Acupuncture may not be the magical ancient remedy cure-all, but it does appear that there is enough proof and a large population of happy patients that will tell you there is some truth to the practice. After all, there has to be some logic as to why poking yourself intentionally with needles has stuck around for over 2,500 years.
So what might you expect when entering your first acupuncture session? Your first appointment may seem to last awhile, but that is typically due to the fact that you and your doctor will spend time discussing any concerns and your symptoms. The needles themselves usually do not take more than 30 minutes to perform. Some patients feel immediate relief, energized and ready to take on whatever is thrown their way, while others tend to feel more relaxed and peaceful, yet tired. There are those who may not feel anything for the first few sessions, and may take several more treatments before a positive improvement can be felt. Recharged or drained, your overall battery will seem to thank you. The majority of patients report that no matter how they felt physically afterwards, mentally and emotionally they felt contentment, balance and happiness. Many also report a slight change in their sleeping and eating habits, along with a change in their bowel movements.
Cost for acupuncture can vary depending on which area you live in and if your acupuncturist accepts your specific insurance or not. When searching for a licensed practitioner, you can ask these questions when making an appointment to help determine which practice to visit. While there are many who may practice acupuncture, make sure you seek a licensed acupuncturist for your treatment. Whole Family Healthcare’s team consists of multiple licensed acupuncturists that are dedicated to helping you through your journey to a healthier you!
